Baby Quilts for Four Please

Posted on June 23, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I had a set of twin nephews born March <cough> of 2014 and I still haven't made them a quilt.  Well, times a running out; we are headed their way in a little under a week.  So I finally came up with a game plan on the colors and pattern, just yesterday.  I wanted something bold and bright, and having a two year old I know they will soon begin to appreciate numbers and colors.  So I took the original pattern from Sew Modern Baby by Angela Yosten, but I didn't want it to be a square, and I wanted to add their names to it (they are twins, so if they're not fighting over what's "mine" I know they will be soon).

The color palette, is good old fashioned primary colors.  We are in the process of learning colors at home, so I know this will go over well.  Did I mention on top of making one for each of my nephews I'm also making one for my little boy and his BFF at daycare… oh the appliqué.

So here we go, all the numbers and names are cut out.  On to the fun that is known as appliqué!

Check back shortly to see an update, we only have one week to get four baby quilts done… will we meet the deadline?!

Herringbone Quilt

Posted on June 18, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

A friend of mine is having a baby, her first baby, and it's a little girl!  I'm so, so excited for her.  Of course I knew I had to make her a quilt!  I asked what her nursery colors are going to be (more like demanded to know… ) and she said coral, aqua and yellow.  How perfect is that!  Those are my favorite colors (plus navy and grey)!  What a perfect color palette for a baby's nursery.

I know she didn't technically say navy and grey, but I just couldn't help myself!  I used a Herringbone pattern, it's a free pattern on Moda's webpage.  The pattern features the Mixed Bag line, which we carry in brushed cottons in our store - and they are heavenly!

Since it was for a baby, I wanted to go for more of a toddler size than the larger size featured on the pattern.  I used a variety of every print my heart desired and cut 2 1/2" strips instead of using a jelly roll.  The backing is a Michael Miller solid called Geranium, it's so soft!

I took it home to photograph since we have a crib, what I didn't anticipate was little man wanting back in his crib during my photography session.  This picture explains my life perfectly; beautiful quilt, rambunctious little boy!

Here are the quilt stats:

Glimmer Quilt

Posted on May 21, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

It's no shock that I am head over heels with BasicGrey's new line Fresh Cut.  It is so light and cheerful, the perfect color pallet for spring!

The pattern we decided on is called Glimmer by Jaybird Quilts.  This pattern utilizes the Super Sidekick Ruler; although you are not required to have this ruler to use the pattern.  The quilt goes together surprisingly quick!

I mean seriously, whats not to love about this fabric line!  Gorgeous colors as well as subtle prints, a very versatile line.

The quilting is a tighter swirl than what we typically used, I think it goes nicely with the quilt pattern.

The hardest part was deciding what colors and prints to use in each layer of the star.  I might do things a little differently the second time around but I have to say I'm quite happy with the effect and fabric placement.

For the backing we used our left over strips from the front and used a Moda Bella Solid for the majority of the backing.

Here are the quilt stats:
Pattern: Glimmer by Jaybird Quilts
Ruler: Super Sidekick Ruler
Size: "Baby Quilt" 44" x 44"
Fabric: Fresh Cut by Basic Grey

Piece and Comfort Challenge Quilt Reveal

Posted on May 09, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

You may remember our blog post stating we were going to participate in Moda's Piece and Comfort Challenge.  Here is our quilt reveal!

We used Red, White and Free by Sandy Gervais.  We liked it because it was patriotic, but a little more on the playful side.

I would like to tell you just how much work it was cutting out all these fabrics, but honestly it was a breeze because we used the Accuquilt with the Flowering Snowball template... piece of patriotic cake in fact.

The quilting is a series of wavy lines that reminds me of fireworks (maybe that's just me!).

The backing is really fun, we used leftover strips from the border which was this awesome panel.

So there you have it!  In all seriousness, we truly appreciate all that the military folks do for our country.  The danger and sacrifices they make for our country often times goes unnoticed and I'm so pleased that Moda decided to do a challenge to honor these men and women.  I am thrilled at the thought of all those beautiful patriotic quilts that will get donated to military families to enjoy.

Here are the quilt stats:
Pattern: Flower Snowball (template used was Accuquilt)
Size: 58" x 73"

Gooseberry Quilt

I'm so very excited to tell you what we've been working on, it was top secret... very hard not to be a blabber mouth sometimes!  This is a quilt that Vanessa Goertzen sent us, she is a fantastic fabric designer for Moda.  Her blog can be found at Lella Boutique, where she talks about more of the quilts featuring her new line Gooseberry.

This pattern is called Kaleidoscope, it hasn't been released yet but when it is you can be certain our store will be carrying it!

The quilting Vanessa chose was a loose loop design.  I think it's perfect for this quilt, not taking away from the overall quilt design.

Let's talk fabric, the fabric is absolutely gorgeous!   Once again, not released yet, but when it is you can be sure our store will be carrying it!  There's florals, dots, pinwheels, I mean really, what's not to love?!

Alright, last photo I promise.  The block is so stunning in this quilt, and looks oh so complicated.  I promise it's not!  Vanessa also has a version that uses two colors, blue and white - to - die - for!

Here are the quilt stats:

Caravan Tote

Posted on May 02, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I was lucky enough to go to a sewing retreat last weekend called The Stash Bash (this was actually my third year going to this event).  We had the option of being in a swap, we filled out a short survey and our partner could go off of those details to make or buy us something we liked.  My partner said she liked Cotton and Steel and Reeces Cups, so that my friend is what she received!

I made her this Caravan Tote pattern is by Noodlehead using Cotton and Steel fabric.  The linen was a fabric I found locally at an Antique Shop and what a perfect find it was!

This Caravan Tote and I spent so much time together I began to think of it as family.  I had such a great time picking out fabric, piecing the patchwork and sewing it together, wondering and hoping my partner would enjoy it!

I purchased the zippers from ZipIt, she was also a sponsor at The Stash Bash.  She has a wonderful selection of zippers, great prices and fantastic customer service.

The pattern called for a ribbon for the top of the Caravan Tote, I did not prepare that much in advance to have anything coordinating.  So instead, I took the ribbon off the fat quarter bundle I purchased and sewed it on coordinating fabric to make my own ribbon/label.  I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out!

This is also my first time installing a magnet closure, it was a piece of cake!  Not sure why I was putting it off so long, I see more of these in my future!

This is a little pouch from the same pattern, it's considered a bonus with the pattern. Such a great size, very practical size as well as the convenient pocket on the outside!

This was a very quick pouch, and will probably become my go to pattern for zippy pouches!  I loved the lining, and continued using the same coral color for edge stitching as I did on my Caravan Tote.

I also had fun picking out a vibrant pink Moda Bella Solid for the inside, I think it coordinates quite well with the exterior fabric.  This pattern was so much fun once I figured out what pieces would be which prints.

Dilly Dally Around Here

Posted on March 17, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I have been working on this quilt for far too long; not because it was difficult, not because I didn't like it but just because something else would always jump in line ahead of it.

Well I'm happy to report I finally got it done, and I absolutely love how it turned out!

The pattern is Dilly Dally by Thimble Blossoms, fabric is Honey Honey by Kate Spain.

I chose roses as the quilting pattern, I had just enough left over scraps from the border to work it in the backing.  The quilted roses show up so well on that beautiful solid fabric on the back.

This block is one of my favorites, something about the navy background with all those pretty flowers.

My next favorite, check out this tiny bee!  These little bee's are scattered around the binding, just adorable!

I am now officially ready for spring to come, maybe if I lay this quilt out spring will come sooner??
