A Swine Evening

We are excited to announce that we have donated a quilt to be put in A Swine Evening silent auction benefiting A Childs Place organization.  If you're not familiar with what good work A Childs Place does, then hop on over to their website!  They are fully funded by donations and fund raising, providing school lunches, uniforms and organizing volunteers to mentor Mecklenburg County homeless children.

Did I mention there were over 4,900 homeless kids in Mecklenburg County last year alone?  Truly hard to believe so many kids and parents have no permanent address.  That's why we have also decided this will be our local organization that our Charity quilts will be donated to, I can think of no better place than helping out these local homeless kids!

Here is the quilt we donated for the silent auction.

The fabric is Kaleidoscope by Northcott Studio, featuring a Dresden Plate pattern.

We used a feather pattern in a white thread color so the quilting flows nicely between the white background and the dresden plates.

I was told this will be placed with a set of rocking chairs that were donated as well as a celebrity decorated pig!  I would love to see all the donations and can't wait to hear how much money they are able to raise!  What an awesome job!

Charity Sewathon

Posted on February 07, 2013 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

Hello everyone!  I'm excited to announce our second Charity Sewathon!  This is our way of giving back to those in need, the type of projects will range from month to month.  The first month we did stacked coins, the second we are doing these "wonky" blocks, the third may be something completely different (I have to keep you on your toes somehow)!

The kits are all cut and ready to go, we have a variety of fabric for both boys and girls.  If you would like to bring some of your stash to make a charity quilt, the more the better!

It's a very easy pattern, really great for beginners and just plain fun for everyone.  The finished size is approximately 31" x 46" making it perfect for a little guy/girl to bring with them where ever they go!

We quilted this one with a loose swirl design, one of my favorite basic designs.

So here are the details I know you have been waiting for me to finally get to:

- We have a Charity Sewathon the Third Wednesday of every month, so put in on your calendar now to remind you!
The sewing hours are from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm and the evening session beginning at 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm (of course you can come and sew for as short as you would like, we're not going to tie you down until it's time to go!)

- Use our kits or bring your own fabric, this quilt requires 6 different colors 10" x WOF (width of fabric).  Yep - that's all this quilt takes, just a little more than a yard and a half of fabric!

- Rotary cutter and ruler if you have one, saves you from waiting in line.

- Sewing machine if you have one.  Otherwise you may get volunteered to do cutting and pressing (which is actually quite fun on this project)!

- The quilts will go to a variety of places, orphanages, children's hospitals or areas affected by natural disasters.  Don't fret, we will post the completed quilts along with their final destinations so you can see who your quilt brings great joy to.

We hope you can join us and look forward to helping those in need.

* Update - Here's a link for the Wonky Block tutorial!

With each quilt purchased from Quilted Thimble Cottage in April, we will donate a quilt to the Call for Quilts for Japan campaign. We want to take this opportunity to says thanks to Joyce for her purchase, and present the quilt that we will be sending along in the relief effort.

Thanks Joyce!

Spending Time Together

Spending Time Together
Every once and a while, as our schedules permit, Jenn and I spend the day together around town. For us, this usually consists going out to breakfast or lunch, and then swinging by a couple of the local stores to window shop (quilt shops, Target, Lowe's...the list is quite long!).

Today turned out to be a little different. Instead of shopping (although the day isn't over yet), we went by the cottage to work on some of our projects. Jenn started the day by working on a scrap bag of fabric from a line that we are (eagerly) awaiting to be delivered called Frolic by Sandy Gervais. We were both amazed by the shear size of the quilt that she was able to make from just one bag. Now for some yardage to finish it up!

Other projects on the list today?
  • Recover from yesterday's yardwork.
  • Finish up 2 charity quilts to send for the Japan relief effort (from our buy-one-give-one effort).
  • Housekeeping items for the cottage
  • Falling victim to our sweet dog's plead for a walk around the block. How could we say no to a face like that??
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!
Jenn & David
