Chalk and Paint Blog Hop

Posted on February 24, 2016 by Jenn Thurston | 1 comment

Hi everyone!  Today is my day for the Chalk and Paint Blog Hop!  I was so excited when I was selected by Sew Caroline (Caroline Hulse) for her blog hop!  Her fabrics are so fun and cheery, I knew it would be an easy challenge for me!

All of her fabrics are so pretty, so I made no specifics to which ones I preferred to receive for the challenge.  Opening the the package of fabric was like opening a Birthday gift!  The fabrics were just perfect for me!  I love blue's and green's so these fabrics were perfection.  Here are the fabrics I used for my blog hop goodies.

I was on the fence about what to make, I knew I wanted to make a pillow cover but just couldn't decide on the pattern.  Then after petting all these pretty fabrics for a few days (everyone does that right?!), it hit me.  I sure do love a kaleidoscope pattern, so I decided to use all my blues with a splash of color for the accent.

I love how it turned out with that pop of orange in there!  The blocks measure 3" finished and the pillow cover finishes at 18" x 18".  All those blues makes me miss the ocean and summer something fierce!

I threw in a little random decorative stitching for good measure, I feel like it adds a little something without being too much of a distraction.

The backing is a mix from two of my favorite prints.  I love the writing, CAPS, cursive, print, bold, thin... I love it all, there was not a better choice than to pair these two prints together.

So I had a little bit of scraps remaining, and if you know anything about me I can't let scraps go to waste of just lie around.  That meant it was time to make another something small.  I was pretty sure I had enough for another... wait for it... pillow cover (yes, I do have a problem... is there a anonymous group for pillow cover making?)

I used my favorite fabric, I only had a 5" square remaining because I selfishly used all of it on the back of the other pillow.  I knew I wanted to do something with the words, and this word in specific called out to me.  It would be perfect in my sewing room, living room, game room, bedroom... you get the idea, this pillow will not have trouble finding a spot in my home.

I use invisible zippers in all of my pillow covers for a few reasons.  I find them quick and easy to install, the pillow won't stretch the enclosure, and it gives it such a nice professional finish.

I hope you enjoyed my post as much as I enjoyed working with these Chalk and Paint fabrics!  If you're jumping in just now, make sure to check out yesterdays post at The Simple Life for the cutest little girl skirts you ever did see!  Can't wait to see what The Pattern Revolution posts tomorrow for her Chalk and Paint project!

Piece Tree

Posted on December 11, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

We have been very busy in the store making quick gifts to be featured in our newsletter.  These are gift ideas that can be made when you have very little time.  If you've missed our newsletters don't worry, I'll make sure to do a recap of all of them!

This Piece Tree pattern is no exception, it is meant to be stretched over canvas but we decided to quilt it.

The background fabric we chose is Moda's Mochi Tan Linen/Cotton mix, it is truly one of our favorite fabrics to work with!

I love the simplicity of the quilting, almost as though you can see the stars twinkling on the Christmas tree!

Details:
Fabric:  Green scraps for the tree, Mochi Dots for the background and Gooseberry for the backing
 * Kits available *
Pattern: Piece Tree featured in Christmas Quilts and More Magazine
Size: Approximately 12" x 24"
Quilting Design: Stars and Loops

Want us to longarm a quilt for you?  Here are just some of the quilts we have longarmed, and we have an easy estimate form to give you an idea on pricing.

Fancy Fox Baby Quilt

Posted on December 10, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

Some of our good friends are having their first baby, so you know what that means... I get to make a quilt for them!  So after much internal debate, I decided I wanted to do the Fancy Fox.  But, in typical Thurston fashion, I decided that in the last minute and we were out of the pattern.

So, I had to improvise and take a guess at the dimensions.  They came out a little larger than the pattern, but I'm alright with that!  In fact, I really like the size; they were fast to cut, fast to sew and they are just so darn cute!

This is my favorite of them, he's a lovely vibrant shade of green and the quilting shows up fabulously!

Speaking of quilting, this is one of my new favorite designs! It's called Super Star, and my husband says it would be perfect for a Captain America quilt (there may be one in Caleb's future... because he really needs another quilt...).

I am terrible about making quilt labels, but I knew I had to make one for this quilt.   I chose to do a machine embroidery label, which Urban Threads has the perfect trendy selection of embroidery quilt labels to choose from.

I'm not much for words, so I kept it short and simple - "Handmade by The Thurston Family for Hunter", I would have loved to include the year but his due date is the beginning of January so you just never know if he'll make an early appearance.

I also made a pillow for his nursery, the half square triangles were from the ears of the foxes and the back of the pillow is the extra from the backing of the quilt.

I really enjoyed making the pillow, simple echo stitches and reversible - it's a win-win!

Just one more photo, because I frankly can't control myself!

Details:
Fabric:  Fabric from my stash! (a mix between Riley Blake, Michael Miller, Moda, etc.)
Pattern: Fancy Fox by Elizabeth Hartman (size slightly larger than original pattern)
Size: Approximately 41" x 49"
Quilting Design: Super Star

Project Bag - A Must Make!

Posted on November 20, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 1 comment

Are you looking for a quick project, and one that's functional too?  Oh do we have a perfect project for you! This is the Project Bag by Patterns by Annie.

It is a great project bag to put your current projects in or would even be great for storage on a road trip for your kids stuff!

This fabric is so adorable, it's Mon Ami by BasicGrey.  It's fun, whimsy, and has such perfect subtle colors.

The Project Bag pattern is wonderful, it has four different project sizes included in the pattern.  The one we made that is pictured is the medium size, 10" x 12".

I know once you make one, you'll want to make one in every size (or at least that's how we feel about it)!

UFO Friday - Bonnie and Camille Scrappy Log Cabin Half Completed

Posted on November 20, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

It's Friday!  I didn't get a chance to work on my UFO last Friday, as we were preparing for the Last Call event.  So I'm picking up where I left off with my Bonnie and Camille Scrappy Log Cabin!

I have all the sashings sewn in every block, now I'm starting to sew my rows with my inset triangles.  I decided to go with the Bella Solid Ruby Ice as my sashing, and I have to say I'm really liking it!

I keep forgetting what a nice size this is going to be (and how long it takes to put blocks on point)!  So I have almost exactly half of the quilt remaining to sew into rows, and I also have to make one more log cabin block because I'm short for the layout I want to use.

Don't forget, you can join in on the fun!  Post your photos on Instagram or on our Facebook page, use hashtag #UFOFridays

The Beatle Bag

Posted on November 13, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

These are The Beatle Bags, perfect for whatever you want to tote around!   The Itty Bitty Beatle Bag is the smaller of the two and The Beatle Bag is the regular size.

The Beatle Bag would be ideal for storing your sewing notions; keep it packed and ready to go that way you can grab it right before heading out the door to all those sew-ins you go to!  It has a pocket for your scissors and a removable pin cushion; great for keeping everything in its place.

Each Beatle Bag Pattern comes with these fancy inserts.  They are so well made, consisting of thick plastic and white slides to keep them closed and easily opens when you need to get something.

The Itty Bitty Beatle Bag is great for a first aid kit.  It has the same strong zipped sleeves as well as elastic loops for holding ointment.

Pattern:  The Beatle Bag and The Itty Beatle Bag
Fabric:  Hello Darling by Bonnie and Camille (The Beatle Bag) and 2wenty Thr3e by Cosmo Cricket (The Itty Beatle Bag)

Seaside Table Runner

Posted on November 12, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

This sweet table runner is called Seaside.  If you're looking for a really simple and quick table runner, this is for you!  For being angles, one might expect it to be tricky to sew.  Well, it's not, not tricky to sew at all.

If you've never used one of Jaybirds patterns you should put it on the top of your list.  Her patterns are fantastic!  They are well illustrated, easy to understand, in fact I have never found an error in one... not one!   This pattern also features the Sidekick Ruler, which I absolutely love!  There are so many cute patterns that use the Sidekick ruler, you'll never run out of uses for it.

The fabric we used is called Chantilly by Lauren + Jessi Jung.  I love their fabrics, they always have such beautiful, crisp lines.

Details:
Fabric:  Chantilly by Lauren + Jessi Jung
