Big Flirt

Meet one of our newest collections called Flirt by Sandy Gervais.  One of the many prints this line offers is a fun and whimsical panel featuring two sweet blue birds perched up high.

One of my favorite features in the quilt is the checkerboard around the inner border, reminds me of ribbon that's been woven.

The panel comes with two of the same prints, so the options are really endless of all the things you could do with it!  The pattern uses the second panel as appliqué in the corners, which I think is a great idea and really adds a lot of detail without all that really tedious layering!

Last but not least is a close up of our backing.  We used a bella solid for the backing and a neutral thread which really features the outline of hearts nicely.  I just love the way it turned out!

The Love for Spring

Posted on December 29, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a happy New Year!  I had an enjoyable Christmas; we stayed home all day, had a home cooked dinner and even squeezed in some movie watching.  Stuff that most people probably take for granted, but I throughly enjoyed it.   Spent the whole day with my wonderful husband, mom and dog (which I think our dog probably didn't appreciate it as much since we interrupted her whole day of napping ritual she has going on).
I do love spring, and since that is far far away I decided to start sewing a store sample with Honey Honey by the wonderful Kate Spain.  It is lovely, the fresh bright colors really made it fun to sew with!
I can only show you a little sneak peak since I'm not finished yet.  I used a dessert roll, it's (20) 5" x WOF.  We will be getting all those fabrics that are featured in the Honey Honey dessert roll.
I was able to squeeze three quilts from one dessert roll!  If you know anything about me, it's that I can't stand to not use all my fabric!  I love using all those scraps!  The one with the pinwheels will be a fairly large size, the other two quilts are great baby sizes.
Now I just have to wait for all that beautiful yardage to come in so I can put borders on and get them quilted!  Patiently waiting...

Ombre Fabric

Ever wonder what to do with that new ombre fabric you've been seeing everywhere?  V and Co has a great idea on her blog for this amazing baby quilt.

Let me be the first to tell you just how easy it is to make!!  I made one this afternoon.  Yes you read that right, one baby quilt in one afternoon.  It's so, so easy.  And addictive, so addictive that I think I may make one in every color!   Checkout the Simply Color line, we have every ombre color!

Stay tuned, I plan on having it quilted soon!  I can only imagine how much cuter it will look, if that's even possible?!

Thinking about a dear friend

Posted on November 18, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 2 comments

We were recently told the news that one of our dear sewing friends had Breast Cancer, reoccurring at that.  Our last call group decided we should make a quilt for her recovery.  We were each given one solid block of white background and a ribbon template.  We could use whatever pink fabric we wanted to and write a special message to our friend Ruth.

Everyone's different pink fabrics were so fun to see!  Not one was similar looking to another.

Such sweet, inspiring messages on every single block!

Each block had it's own special touch to remind her of each one of us.

We will be thinking about our dear friend Ruth and wish her a speedy recovery!

Granny Square Happiness

Posted on November 04, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 1 comment

Have you noticed Granny Squares are everywhere in the quilting world?  I definitely have noticed, and I've been dying to make a block or two.  So go figure, I had some scraps left over from a previous quilt (if there is one thing I can tell you about myself,  it's that I hate to see my fabric scraps go to waste and sit in a dark closet all by their lonesome).  So I made a block, and really loved how it turned out.  So I kept at it and made this small baby quilt for some friends of ours.

The line is Vintage Modern by Bonnie and Camille.

Here's a close up of the embroidery.  Charlee Ann such a sweet name that I had to put it in a fun whimsical font.

One of my favorite features of this quilt is using different color strips for the binding, no two strips are the same giving it such a playful feel.  (Also goes back the fact I avoid putting anything in my scrap basket!)

One last picture... I used floppy daisy as the quilting design with a white thread to not take away from the quilt.  I thought with the bright colors in the fabric the design was perfect.  I hope little Charlee enjoy's her new quilt!

Scrappy String Quilt

Posted on September 07, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I'm in love with this Lucy's Crab Shack fabric by Sweetwater.  I was making a quilt (to be revealed at a later date...) and had all these tiny strips remaining measuring between 3/4" to 1 1/4".  I actually threw them in the trash, I kept looking at them thinking what could I possibly do with these...

I have always wanted to make one of those string quilts so I figured what the heck - I'm gonna try with these tiny strips.  And what do you know... it was actually enough fabric to make this cutie patootie table runner!

I used the foundation piecing method, it worked wonderfully.  Just be very careful when peeling the paper off the back not to stretch the fabric since it's on the bias!

The back is just as fun as the front, I pieced my scraps that weren't used on the front to break up the solid backing.  The quilting pattern is a fun feather looking pattern that has a cool interlocking swirl look.

From start to finish this quilt was a lot of fun to make!  I would even say it went pretty quick... the size is perfect for a night stand or coffee table.

Sweet Pineapple

So maybe you have heard me talk about this new Pineapple Ruler we got in.  Once the precutting is done, the Pineapple blocks practically make themselves (well not quite... but almost).

Here it is, doesn't look like much but it's super easy to use.  Here are some pictures of the class we had, I was so impressed that every one finished one block!!

Terry not only finished one block in class, she got 75% done on her other blocks as well.  She sent a picture of her whole quilt top completed later that night!
