Goody Goody Binding Kit

Posted on July 22, 2015 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

Anyone that knows me, knows that I'm not one for hand stitching on binding (or anything else hand work for that matter).  Not that I don't love the look, it's just not my thing.  I think it's because I'm so slow at it, I know practice makes perfect.

However, Vanessa Goertzen with Lella Boutique has a very cute sew along for a Goody Goody Binding Kit that might just make me change the way I feel about hand binding.  We're participating in a sew along sponsored by Fat Quarter Shop.  If you would like to sew along with us, the full tutorial can be found at Lella Boutique's blog.

Here are the fabrics I have selected.  All of them being Bonnie and Camille, mostly Daysail but I did pull out some favorites from the Vintage Modern line.

This is the exterior to my Goody Goody Binding Kit, it's one of my favorite prints from Vintage Modern.  I love the colors and the floral design, definitely had to include this print!

I'm currently finished installing the zipper, Fat Quarter Shop has a great video with Vanessa featuring zipper installation.  Swing back by tomorrow to see more progress!  I do hope you'll join the sew along with us!  If you make a Goody Goody Binding Kit you can tag it #goodygoodysewalong so we can all see what you're making too!

Happy Go Luck in the Store

Posted on June 03, 2013 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

Check out Bonnie and Camille's newest line Happy Go Lucky.  Every line they come out with I think "this is my favorite one", then they out do themselves on the next line!  This one is exceptionally nice because they added a navy to make a pop of color.  I made a sample quilt for our store using two charm packs and some white fabric.  The quilt pattern can be found in the book Fresh Fabric Treats, very easy and fun to make.

So fun in fact, that I used the few charm squares I had remaining from the quilt to make a pillow.  For the pillow cover I cut the charms into 2.5" squares and used the same wonky star technique.  Like I said really fun to make, I'm sure this is not the last wonky start object you'll see from me!

The colors in this line are so stunning, yellow, navy and of course red and aqua.

You really must check it out soon, with a line this delicious it will certainly be gone soon!

Fireworks Quilt

Posted on March 19, 2013 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

There are so many lovely quilts that I wish I had time to make, but let's be real... there's not enough time in the day to make every quilt that I want to.  Lucky for me we longarm, so I'm fortunate enough to be able to live through other peoples quilts.  Emily recently brought in her quilt she made for her mom's birthday.  (Lucky mom!)

The pattern is Firecracker by Thimble Blossoms.

She used a balanced mix between Vintage Modern, Ruby and Marmalade.

The quilt turned out so nice and cheery, we quilted it with a feather design.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it helps me seeing this beautiful quilt done or not, I now have a overwhelming urge to make one myself!  Oh well for that theory...

Granny Square Happiness

Posted on November 04, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 1 comment

Have you noticed Granny Squares are everywhere in the quilting world?  I definitely have noticed, and I've been dying to make a block or two.  So go figure, I had some scraps left over from a previous quilt (if there is one thing I can tell you about myself,  it's that I hate to see my fabric scraps go to waste and sit in a dark closet all by their lonesome).  So I made a block, and really loved how it turned out.  So I kept at it and made this small baby quilt for some friends of ours.

The line is Vintage Modern by Bonnie and Camille.

Here's a close up of the embroidery.  Charlee Ann such a sweet name that I had to put it in a fun whimsical font.

One of my favorite features of this quilt is using different color strips for the binding, no two strips are the same giving it such a playful feel.  (Also goes back the fact I avoid putting anything in my scrap basket!)

One last picture... I used floppy daisy as the quilting design with a white thread to not take away from the quilt.  I thought with the bright colors in the fabric the design was perfect.  I hope little Charlee enjoy's her new quilt!

Quilt as you go Technique

Posted on October 08, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 5 comments

We are doing a small casserole carrier for an upcoming class and thought it would be helpful to write a post about the "quilt as you go" technique.  So here is what you will need for supplies:

Batting
Backing
Strips - jelly rolls are very convenient for this process! (but varied widths work just as well)
Coordinating thread (the thread will only show up on the backing)
Walking Foot

Here is the fabric we have selected, batting, backing and strips.

Fabric is the lovely Bliss by Bonnie and Camille.

Lay backing with wrong side up, place batting on top of backing.  We have our batting slightly larger than our backing to allow for any shrinkage during quilting.

Find the middle of your backing, place one strip of fabric directly in the middle right side up.

Place the strip that will be featured next to it, right sides together.

Here is another view.  Right sides together, ready to be sewn.

Pin in place to prevent shifting during sewing.

Sew with right sides together, 1/4" seam allowance.  We recommend using a walking foot, this has multiple layers of fabric and the walking foot will prevent shifting as you sew.

We placed a pin at the top of the quilt to know which side we began sewing on, with each strip you add you want to start on the opposite end of your last strip.  This prevents pulling and shifting when quilting, making it more even.

Open strips, quickly press open with the iron making sure not to let the iron stay in one place to long.

Continue with placing your next strip right sides together to the strip just sewn.

Stitch a 1/4" seam allowance, remember to start from the opposite end of the previous strip.  (Opposite end from where you placed your marking pin)

Press open, repeat steps until all your strips have been sewn on one side.

Begin sewing your strips on the opposite side.  Place right sides together, pin, sew 1/4", press open and repeat until the other side of strips are finished.

Trim down and as your pattern requires.

And there you have it - all strips have been quilted as you go!

A Very Merry Vintage Christmas

Posted on August 18, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I've been on a Christmas kick lately, mostly for sewing, but I have even managed to pick up an early gift here or there when I run across something prefect for that perfect someone (Yay me, because for the last two years I have been completely and utterly last minute).  So here is another finished project, the pattern is called Vintage Christmas by Thimble Blossoms.

This is a really, really easy pattern.  It also goes together incredibly quick, the most time consuming part is choosing your fat quarters to use.  Yep, I said fat quarters, this pattern is fat quarter friendly.  I love patterns that are fat quarter friendly!  I'm sure I'm not the only one that has a fat quarter stash, just waiting for the prefect project to come along... or am I?  Nah.... can't be.

Here is my favorite block.  The pattern has 12 different ornaments, I only chose four because I wanted a table runner for our naked kitchen table.

I used Vintage Modern by Bonnie and Camille, the pattern cover also features it nicely.  We have four different fat quarter bundles of Vintage Modern that would work great with this pattern.  I'm enjoying that it's not traditional Christmas fabric, the vintage look. I think it gives it a nice, fresh look.

Hexagon Dish Towel

Posted on June 22, 2012 by Jenn Thurston | 0 comments

I made this cute little dish towel the other week and just wanted to share how it turned out.  It's no secret that I love Bonnie and Camille's fabric (what ever line it is, I can guarantee I have it).  I wanted to do something a little different with this fabric than just making a quilt, so I ran across some dish towels I had lying around for a while and thought I wouldn't mind doing some cheater applique with them.

I really like how it turned out, but with those colors how could you not??

Here's a close up of the cheater applique.  Traditional hexagons are all hand stitched - if you know one thing about me, I'm not a hand stitching type of girl.  So I used some heat and bond, and edge stitched.  It may not be traditional but I sure like how quick the project finished up!

Ready for use - although I think it maybe be too pretty to be used in our house!

If anyone is interested, there will be some kits posted soon.  Check back for an update of where they can be found.
